Needless to say, there have been a LOT of changes within the software used on our site. Areas that have gotten a lot of changes include the entire Event Calendar content area and the Notification system. In tests, these improvements - overall - have provided so many benefits to the workflow that I felt confident in activating default subscription settings for this area of the forum (to notify everyone about such changes) as well as those registered on the site in various roles. Amongst these is a subscription to notices about published Event Calendar content for everyone registered who is not listed as belonging to a User Group outside of this region or as a business sponsor. (Connected to the basic assumption that everyone falling into this category lives in this region and would have an interest in such notices.) All fine and good thus far in so far as how everything should work!
However, one major flaw has been found within this setup. It has to do with the promotion of published content to or from the front page of the site. (A toggle setting.) Apparently the Notification system assumes this status change should trigger a notice. I have gone back and forth with the programmers involved in that project and they insist this is a feature of how things should work. I beg to differ with that viewpoint, as (IMO) such a status change has nothing to do with the publishing or updating of the content itself.
Thankfully the programmers have finally provide a means to suppress such notices, but this does involve extra steps from those of us handling the content, (Editors, look for an updated video tutorial soon!) In the meantime, there is a high risk for such notices to be triggered particularly with Event Calendar items. I apologize - in advance - if such notices are sent out and anyone finds them annoying. This is an area I am continuing to work on so as to achieve our goals of promotion while not annoying the heck out of anyone! There are certainly many other improvements in the works for the Notification system to provide more options within subscription settings. I am also going to do a video tutorial explaining those for the benefit of everyone too. Look for a link to that from the already published Notification Overview page, as well as within a new section devoted to video tutorials. Those interested in helping to test those options should look for more information in the General Discussion area of the forum.
